Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD is a condition that a person can develop after experiencing an intensely traumatic event where a person's safety and well being is threatened. It is very common that members of the military experience PTSD as a result of being exposed to combat situations. Other traumatic events that can lead to PTSD include: rape, car crashes, violent assault, sexual or physical abuse, kidnapping, and medical procedures.
The symptoms of PTSD can last for several weeks or years after an event. They may come and go over time and sometimes can appear out of the blue. Often times, symptoms are triggered by something that can be a reminder of the event like a smell, a noise, or certain words.
Symptoms of PTSD can include:
Difficulty Sleeping
Headaches and Migraine Headaches
Muscle aches and pains
Muscle tension
Irritability
Difficulty concentrating
Hyper-vigilance
If you suspect you have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, it is important that you contact your doctor right away.
How does Bowen Therapy help with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder?
When a person experiences an intensely traumatic event, the body reacts in a way that stimulates the nervous system specifically the sympathetic nervous system or the "fight or flight" response. The symptoms of PTSD are a result of an overly stimulated sympathetic nervous system.
Bowen Therapy is done in a way that helps to facilitate the body to move from the sympathetic nervous system response to a parasympathetic "rest, digest, and heal" response. When people who suffer from PTSD receive Bowen Therapy their results are often decreased muscle pain, ability to sleep, and decreased headaches and migraines.
