Herndon Headaches Page
Welcome to The Herndon Headache Page! Do you suffer from Chronic Headaches? Tension Headaches? Migraine Headaches?
People who suffer from headaches typically suffer from high levels of stress and tension in their neck and shoulders. Actually, about 90% of all headaches are tension headaches caused by tight muscles in the neck, upper back, shoulders, and chest. This tension in the upper body can be a direct result of daily stress, poor postural habits, sitting and working at a computer for long hours, carrying purses, bags, and children, sleeping positions, grinding and clenching your teeth, and not drinking enough water. What can you do for Headache Relief? *Don't sit for more than 30 minutes at a time. Set a timer at your desk, every 30 minutes, get up walk around for 1-2 minutes. Stretch your arms, neck, and shoulders. *Carry a small light weight purse. Clean it out often so you are not carrying around a lot of extra weight in clutter. *If you need to carry heavier things, use a backpack and carry it over both shoulders. *Sleep on your back. DO NOT sleep on your side or your stomach. Sleeping on your side, forces and keeps your shoulders in a forward rounded position that tightens up your chest and strains your upper back. Sleeping on your stomach forces an extreme torque in your neck that results in an imbalance in the neck muscles. *If you clench or grind your teeth, if your jaw aches, clicks or pop, contact your dentist right away and ask them about getting fitted for a night guard or a splint. *Drink 1/2 of your body weight in ounces of water per day to be sure you are staying properly hydrated. Headaches can occur when you do not drink enough water. The tissues in your body become dehydrated and literally shrink. The dehydrated tissues and membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord tighten and put pressure on your nervous system. Research has shown that muscles will relax almost immediately when you drink water. What can Bowenwork Therapeutics do for YOUR Headache Relief? Bowenwork not only address the tension and tight muscles of the neck, upper back, shoulders, and chest, but addresses the body as a whole system. For example, there can be imbalances in the pelvis that cause a shift at the shoulders and the neck resulting in tightness and pain. Bowenwork has specific protocols to address these pain and postural patterns that are often the cause of your headache. The way Bowen moves are performed and their precise location over muscle, tendons, ligaments, and nerves create a reaction in the body that facilitates a shift in the nervous system to move from "fight or flight" (sympathetic mode) to a "rest, digest, and heal" (parasympathetic mode). This allows the body to reset, relax, and heal.
