Relief for Pain, Numbness, and Tingling in the Hands
Wrist pain? Pain, numbness and tingling in the hands and fingers? Hand weakness? Tight and sore neck?
The symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and a repetitive injury are very similar. Often, people will self diagnose with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome or will be misdiagnosed by physician. When wrist pain, numbness and tingling in the hands and fingers begin to present themselves, it is vital to seek a practitioner to help address this as soon as possible. Early intervention can prevent increased pain and can prevent the need for surgery. Numbness and tingling in the hand and fingers is a result of nerve compression either directly in the wrist or the neck. Depending on the area of the hand and which fingers are being effected, you will be able to tell what nerve is being compressed. The nerves that are affecting the arm and hand are directly coming from the neck (specifically cervical vertebrae 5, 6, 7, 8 and the first thoracic vertebrae). A posturally misaligned neck will create tension and tightness in the neck muscles which in turn compress the nerves. Here is a list of the most common postural misalignments and habits the contribute to Carpal Tunnel Pain, Repetitive Injury, and numbness and tingling in the hands and fingers: *Lots of time doing computer work. Typing, mouse use, and a poor ergonomic work station *Side sleeping *Carrying a child or heavy bag on one side Here is a list of what you can do: 1. Wear your glasses when at the computer to prevent a forward head posture when straining to see the computer screen. If you are not sure, have your vision checked. 2. Get a small wrist lift to decrease the strain and pressure on your wrists when typing. 3. If you are doing a lot of work with the mouse, you can find mouse pads that have a built in wrist pillow/lift. 4. Start training yourself to sleep on your back. It took me almost a year to do this, so please don't give up trying. 5. Set a timer on your desk for every 30 minutes to get up and move around, and do a few shoulder stretches.
