What is Bowen Therapy and How Can it Help YOU?

At Bowenwork Therapeutics, Herndon's Pain Therapy Center, these are just some of the conditions that can be helped using Bowen Therapy:

What is Bowen Therapy?

Bowen Therapy, also known as Bowenwork, was developed by the late Tom Bowen in Geelong, Australia. It is a unique modality of body work that is comprised of gentle yet highly effective moves across muscles, tendons, and peripheral nerves that trigger the body’s natural self healing response. Healing may occur at all levels in the body: physical, chemical, emotional, mental, and energetic.

What should I expect in a Bowen session?

At Bowenwork Therapeutics, your session consists of a series of gentle moves either on skin or through light clothing while you are lying comfortably on a massage table. A session may last any where from 20 to 90 minutes depending on the degree of the conditions or injuries presented. Between each set of moves, the practitioner leaves the room for a few minutes to give your body and nervous system to integrate the moves.

How Does Bowen Work?

In addition to the re-balancing of the autonomic nervous system, Bowenwork moves and procedures may reset the body to heal itself by activating the nervous and endocrine systems, among others, through the following mechanisms:

Stretch reflex: Most moves are done where receptors are located. These receptors are stimulated which changes the stimulus received by the nervous system. This can change a pain/muscle spasm loop.

Joint proprioceptors: The joint capsule and ligaments are richly innervated with proprioceptors. Stimulus will be received by the nervous system, inviting normalization of the joint function.

Fascia: Fascia play a major role in muscle coordination, postural alignment and overall structural and functional integrity. It is not uncommon to see adhesions loosen up, scar tissue soften, and posture and mobility improve.

Segmental viscerosomatic spinal reflexes: Moves produce referred reactions to the internal organs through stimulation of the skin, muscles and nerves.

Acupuncture points and meridians: Most moves overlap at least one acupuncture point. The overlap of these systems can explain the very strong vibrational component of the technique and its effect on the internal organs.

Harmonic vibration or resonance: Bowenwork moves set up vibrational patterns which bring the body back into balance and harmony.

Lymphatics: Activates draining of the lymphatic system, stimulating the immune system.

Detoxification: This is initiated during a Bowen session, thereby improving the body's ability to function at a cellular level.
